History of e-learning in City & Guilds

City & Guilds has established a global presence with its qualifications for many decades. Technology innovations have presented an opportunity for the organisation to begin to integrate ICT-based assessment (e-assessment) into their business in recent years. They envisaged that this new initiative would provide an opportunity to understand more about online learning, including automated and tutor supported formative assessment activities. This meant however, that for the first time, City & Guilds was engaging in learning programme design (not their mainstream business), and technology enabled learning (leading edge education and training activity), and also experimenting with new ways to embed assessment into the learning process.

City & Guilds, through relationships built up over many decades, has strong links to the education and training sector in the UK. However, these relationships are built on a reputation as a qualifications body with rigorous standards of assessment. The actual education and training delivery for their qualifications has always been the task of their academic and training partners. This was their first step into developing content.
