The resources and City & Guilds
The resources for self-development and learning for unpaid carers are called Learning for Living and comprise four modules. At the time of writing, the content and learning processes of the two first modules have been developed and the final two modules are in development. Only Module 1 was piloted for ICCA and comprises four units of approximately 2.5 hours learner time each. As this is the introductory module, much of the content is aimed at engaging the carer and beginning processes of self-reflection as well as articulating the role and occupational tasks of a home-based carer. The resources are all available online and include text, graphics and some interactive exercises. There are communications functions available to the user, who can communicate directly with a tutor and participate in a discussion with other carers in a selected group (participant access is controlled by the course administrator). Each unit has two formative assignments for the user to complete and submit online to the tutor.
City & Guilds has developed the Learning for Living e-learning resources (development was contracted to an e-learning specialist developer), hosted the delivery environment and arranged all Learning for Living testing and piloting. The organisation has also developed an environment for tutors and systems for administrators. City & Guilds has now received NQF accreditation for the qualification from the QCA. From a business perspective, City & Guilds has also been modelling how the programme would roll out and the business model that might be adopted.
