City & Guilds

Group e-Strategy and Learning, City & Guilds of London Institute, was the lead partner for the ICCA project, having been recognized by Treasury Board as a Voluntary Body. City & Guilds is a company with £63.5m revenue in 2002-3, and a registered charity, Head Quartered in London. It is the leading vocational awarding body in the UK, awarding 50% of all National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs). It issues over a million certificates each year to learners through a channel of 8,500 approved City & Guilds centres worldwide. City & Guilds’ vision is “Skills for Prosperity”, that is “to build a world in which all people and organisations can access skills needed for economic and personal well being”. City and Guilds is structured to provide and maximise access to assessment and learning services across six broad market areas and 22 occupational groups.

City & Guilds of London Institute was founded in 1878 and is Incorporated by Royal Charter (1900) and it is also a registered Charity.

The aim of the Department for Education and Skills is to give children an excellent start in education, enable young people to equip themselves with life and work skills, and encourage adults to achieve their full potential through learning. The Department sets out the Government's strategic direction for education and works with a wide range of
partners to achieve the outcomes it seeks.

The DfES e-Learning Strategy Unit is developing a unified e-learning strategy, following an extensive consultation involving all key stakeholder groups, which it hopes to
publish in the autumn.

ISB

The Invest to Save Budget (ISB) is a joint Treasury/Cabinet Office initiative with an aim to create sustainable improvements in the capacity to deliver public services in a more joined up manner. A key principle of the ISB programme is that investment is provided in return for reform.
ISB plays a key part in ensuring that the Government's aims for public service are realised. It is a fund for public sector entrepreneurs to try out new ideas in service provision. The ICCA project is ISB 279, awarded in March 2003.
The ISB gives small, but significant, amounts of money for partnership projects that would otherwise fall between the cracks. It provides a funding mechanism for projects that are too risky for any individual partner to take on, but may provide significant gains to the wider public sector.

e-communications

e-communications Ltd is a company which designs and creates e-learning systems - and provides consultancy and funding for e-learning businesses.

Founded in 1997 it has worked with The States of Guernsey, The Government of Malta, The DfES and the BBC on e-learning systems and methods. It is now a preferred supplier to the BBC's Digital Curriculum project - which will provide online learning resources free of charge to the UK's schools.

EDS

EDS works across a wide range of industries and environments globally and has pioneered solutions from automated job-hunting kiosks to providing systems that help the UK's court system to operate more efficiently. Working across such a rich environment has shown how frustrating the barriers to e-Services can be and explains why EDS has supported the ICCA project in its drive to reduce them.

In the UK EDS has almost 16,000 staff and delivers solutions to a broad range of clients; from BP to DWP (Department for Work and Pensions), our British clients are as diverse as the solutions we offer them. In support of our clients EDS provides a broad portfolio of business and technology services, from management consultancy, through change management and training to the development and operation of IT systems.

FAB

FAB’s activities are focused on achieving a vocational qualification system that meets the differing needs of candidates, employers, education and training providers and awarding bodies as well as offering good value to funding bodies and taxpayers. Members range from organisations that are well known for offering vocational qualifications for a particular industry, to larger generic awarding bodies offering vocational qualifications across a wide range of sectors. FAB members represent over 90% of vocational awards in UK.

HTI

Formed as an independent consultancy with charitable status in 1986, HTI (Heads, Teachers and Industry) is dedicated to raising standards of leadership and management in education, working in partnership with education, business and Government.

Imperial College

Imperial College is a world-class engineering, medical research and teaching institute delivering world class scholarships, education and research in science, engineering and medicine, with particular regard to their application in industry, commerce and healthcare, fostering interdisciplinary working internally and collaborating widely externally.

Leicester College

Lewisham College

Lewisham College enjoys a national and international reputation of excellence and innovation and this was formally recognised when the College achieved Beacon status in 1999 after gaining eight grade ones, five general and three curriculum, during the DfEE inspections. Lewisham College is at the forefront of providing e-learning and has been an integral partner of the ICCA project. .

LTSB has been using technology-supported learning within its training systems for a number of years. Lloyds TSB took part in the Retail and Services pilot for the ICCA project: an evaluation of a pilot e-learning programme in a LTSB Contact Centre and the preparation of a case study describing e-learning at LTSB and including a review of how LTSB is responding to the factors that influence the adoption of technologies in learning.

The Ministry of Defence is responsible for defending the United Kingdom and promoting international peace and security. It is also responsible for developing careers and skills for life to serving personnel and providing them with the opportunity to gain further skills on departing the service for civilian life.

NHSU

The NHSU aims to put lifelong learning at the heart of better health and social care. They believe that giving everyone working in health and social care the opportunity to learn and develop, both personally and professionally, is the key to improving services for all patients and clients. NHSU plans to use e-learning as part of a mix of learning approaches, giving flexibility to meet and support individual learning needs of those working in health and social care.

The Open University admitted its first students in 1971. It is the UK's largest university, with over 200,000 students and customers. The OU represents 22% of all part-time higher education students in the UK. The university is ranked amongst the top UK universities for the quality of its teaching. Of the 23 subjects assessed by the Quality Assurance Agency, 17 have been placed in the top 'Excellent' category. Courses are available throughout Europe and, usually by means of partnership agreements with other institutions, in many other parts of the world. About 26,000 learners are studying OU courses outside the UK.

Ufi's learning services are being delivered through learndirect, which provides access to innovative and high quality courses, over 80 percent of them on-line. learndirect will enable people to fit learning into their lives, learning wherever they have access to the internet - at home, at work, or in one of over 2000 learndirect centres.

Action for Carers and Employment (ACE National), led by Carers UK is an exciting and innovative partnership. ACE National aims to raise awareness of the barriers facing carers who want to work, and to test and promote ways of supporting them. The project, funded by the European Social Fund's Equal programme, will run from May 2002 to May 2005.

Carers UK is a registered charity that provides support to anyone who is a carer whether a professional or caring for a family member. They provide information, training and advice to carers through a freephone advice service, booklets and media publications. They also support and commission research to gain a better understanding of the problems facing carers and to assist in the development of policies based on real needs.

FAS

Based in Ireland, FÁS provides a range of training and employment programmes, aimed at employers, employees and unemployed people. FAS was established in 1988 to provide a wide range of services to the Irish labour market. The functions of FÁS include training and re-training services to business and unemployed people including responsibility for apprenticeships, recruitment, employment schemes and community services.

In the year 2000 they appointed a Director of Lifelong Learning and established FAS Net-College to fulfil their EU treaty obligations and provide on-line training services to the general public. Board Members are appointed by the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment.

GMP

E-learning has been used in workforce training and development in the Greater Manchester Police since the late 1990s. They have been one of the most innovative forces in England and Wales in their adoption and experimentation with learning technologies. In 2000, they began work establishing resource learning centres (RLCs) following evaluation of their early experience of Computer Based Training in the late 1990s and the positioning of CBT as a complementary (and not alternative) resource for classroom based training.

HFT

The aim of Home Farm Trust is ‘to meet the hopes and need of people with learning disabilities’. In order to achieve this HFT offer a range of services which include supported living, residential care, supported employment, transition workshops and ICT training and research to name a few.

HP

Hewlett Packard delivers vital technology for business and life. The company's solutions span IT infrastructure, personal computing and access devices, global services and imaging and printing for consumers, enterprises and small and medium business.

IDeA

The Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) was established by and for local government in April 1999. Their mission is to make all public services the best public services by supporting self-sustaining improvement from within local government. Among the IDeA’s priorities is e-government. The IDeA helps local authorities transform the ways in which they lead their communities and deliver services through the opportunities offered by e-government.

NEC

The National Extension College (NEC) was set up over 40 years ago as a charity to help people of all ages fit learning into their lives.
They support over 10,000 learners a year on home study courses; provide quality open learning resources for organisations and training providers such as schools and FE Colleges. The NEC work with private and public sector business to organize training programmes which will allow employees to study at work at convenient times and promotes the value of distance learning .
