Scope
The ICCA pilot team chose to try and simulate the use of the resources in the context of one possible future use scenario. This 'use case' was within a triangular relationship between learners, the local carers' centre and a local FE college. A primary objective was to see which of the toolkit factors emerged as important when these resources were being used in a specific context. While usability studies can be carried out on resources out of context of actual 'use cases', valuable feedback occurs when the resources and learning approaches are evaluated in specific contexts.
The scenario
The 'use case' adopted for the ICCA pilot of Learning for Living resources (which City & Guilds describe as a single 'resource') was one in which the ICCA team attempted to simulate one future scenario. In this scenario, learners would be provided with guidance about the e-learning resources and the Learning for Living qualification either by the carers' centre staff or by guidance staff in the college of Further Education. While the carers' centres would act as a 'recruitment agent', the learners would be formally registered with the local FE College. This latter body would provide the normal student services (including guidance for other skills development and future pathways). The tutor would be contracted by the FE college and be subject to their normal contractual obligations and codes of practice. The Learning for Living resources, available through a password-protected website, would be supplied by City & Guilds on submission by the college of a formal request/learner registration.
In this scenario, the qualification would be available to those wishing to undergo assessment and the college would act as the formal assessment centre. It was also anticipated that fees, based on a per capita amount for either e-learning resource access and/or the qualification, would be paid by the college to City & Guilds. The college would pay the tutor according to their contract. Funding would most likely be drawn down by the FE college from relevant financial programmes provided by the local LSC and based on a per registered learner fee. Use of outreach facilities (eg carers' centres' e-learning suites) would be negotiated between the college and the local carers' centre.
