Linking e-learning to clear learning and business goals
At first they did not consider e-learning because they felt that it would need a high up-front investment. However, they have discovered that they can make the appropriate and scalable investment they need if it serves a clear business purpose. They have been cleverly using partnerships locally to extend their budgetary capacity linking up with the LSC, Northumberland College, the TUC and others. For example, basic skills has been a key target for the Council and one where they have been able to deploy e-learning and to give access to staff that previously would not have been able to receive learning and development provision. And, interestingly, they consider that the flexibility of response from the training and development department in meeting business needs as they arise can be increased by their use of learning technologies.
