e-Learning for corporate induction

The appointment of the Management Development Advisor is relatively recent (1 year). The need to significantly improve the corporate induction process and content was identified by him in 2003 and a decision was taken to innovate the induction process by adopting a new technology-supported solution which would be flexible, interactive, multimedia and would provide information resources for all staff (not just new recruits, who comprise approximately 8-10% annually of 2,500 staff). The cost was relatively small and from within existing budget but nonetheless required corporate approval. Agreement was based on the cost savings (it will replace existing classroom-based training) and on the basis of a significant improvement and flexibility in provision. The resources, including video presentations from the CEO were developed by a local company.

It is not clear what measurement criteria will be put in place to compare the effectiveness of the new programme to the old classroom-based provision. Although it can be accessed thorough the intranet, it is a stand-alone induction programme; ie the content is not currently embedded into the corporate intranet resources database. There has not been any planning to develop a corporate wide strategy on learning technologies/training and development utilising ICTs but the new induction programme is seen as a 'gateway' into a process of building awareness and familiarity with technology in learning. Launched in late February 2004, it is anticipated that it will be the first introduction to learning technologies for many managers and their staff. Although there is no intention to track usage, managers will be expected to ensure new staff use it; the view was expressed that the culture in the organisation would not accept induction training participation to be a mandatory requirement. There are also plans by directorates to have a link from the corporate e-induction programme to a local directorate induction later in 2004.
