e-Learning at NEC

Learning technologies
NEC has always used a range of media and technologies in the learning process. Learning resources for some parts or all of some courses have been available on CDROM since 1996, and on the web since 2001. Some content is now available exclusively online, for example, the interactive aspect of their Creative Writing Course where learners have 'access to an area of the NEC site where you can share work, ideas and experiences with other students in online forums and a chat area. A tutor-moderator will conduct scheduled workshops and lead peer-feedback activities.'

NEC is developing its own LMS based on open source software, a decision that was influenced by the IT director who favoured open source, and its anticipated cost effectiveness. The need for a customised LMS has been driven by the fact that NEC's IPR is intimately bound up with their ability to support students, a highly customised system reflects both the reality of their processes and offerings and branding perception.

Online tutoring
NEC tutor support, accessible through web communications applications, were first piloted in 2001 and are now available for some courses eg Tutoring Online, which uses NEC's Virtual Learning Environment.

Learner self efficacy
A 2003 resource, Learning Online, aims to improve the self-efficacy of those wanting to learn online. It applies NEC's experience and expertise in study skills for distance learning to e-learning 'to enable learners to:
  • identify their ideal learning style to develop basic learning and study skills using ICT
  • make the most of online learning opportunities to develop strategies for personal learning
  • evaluate online learning offers and integrate these with offline learning opportunities
  • use the internet as a tool for learning.'
Beginning with an initial self-review, Learning Online includes 10 short modular sections available in html format with downloadable pdf files and web links and is mapped to relevant Key Skills and IT qualifications at Level 2. Schools can use their e-learning credits with this product.
