ICT experience, use of and attitude towards technology

75% have been using a computer since before 1998, and half the participants have been using a PC at home for 6 years or more. 20% have no home computer. About 30% were early users of the Internet with half accessing it since 2001. 40% of participants use their PC at home for information searching with slightly fewer using it for activities requiring word processing. Most of those with home computers use them for at least one or two activities such as banking, learning and accounts. Reflecting the age structure of the participants, there is a different emphasis on use among their family members with 9 of the 25 stating that their home PCs are used in family learning and 20% state they are used for games. Searching also features prominently.

As might be expected with a sample with relatively long familiarity with PCs but relatively limited use, 65% consider themselves competent users of basic applications; with equal numbers (five) considering themselves to be at each end of competence - beginner and more advanced users. 75% of users have no ICT qualifications. Two indicated they had achieved CLAIT.

Most participate in some internet-supported activity on a weekly basis. About 30% spend a lot of time (7 hours plus per week) on non-job related PC-supported tasks at which another 30% spend less than one hour. A third spend less than one hour per week on the internet, and another third between one and three hours. Only three of the 25 spend more than 7 hours. All respondents to this question consider the internet has a positive impact on their working life. 80% think the internet has a positive impact on their home and social life, only one considers it to have a negative impact.
