Preparing for the pilot (p2)

Tutor induction
No formal assessment of the tutor's competencies was undertaken by the ICCA pilot team nor was there any knowledge/skills gap analysis undertaken. However, in the autumn of 2003, the evaluator requested the Lewisham Carers' Centre tutor to complete a questionnaire and the results were shared with her ICCA pilot team associates from the college and from City & Guilds.

The use of the questionnaire was aimed at helping the evaluator baseline the tutor's existing levels of ICT skills and habits of use of ICTs. It also asked about her teaching/training experiences and practices, as well as what she hoped to accomplish in terms of her own development during the pilot. It included a list of skills areas for self-rating. Specifically, it included questions about e-learning experience, training and expectations including anticipated barriers to the use of technologies in learning. Other questions were about her own learning style and codes of practice. She was also asked to indicate the length of time it took to complete the questionnaire and which questions were most difficult and most surprising. Her reflections and responses were shared with the other ICCA pilot team members with the aim, of providing her and her team associates with a framework and reference point for planning her development and preparation for the pilot.

Over the following weeks, she met and was given coaching by the Lewisham College e-learning staff member. The City & Guilds Learning for Living Technical and Piloting Manager demonstrated the Learning for Living website and functions. She gained some useful experience through tutoring one volunteer learner during this period. Together, the group developed an outline skills profile for Learning for Living Tutors, and a list of tutor responsibilities and duties.

In January 2004, prior to the commencement of the pilot, the evaluator provided another self-assessment questionnaire to the tutor to ascertain her views on her state of readiness and what she believed she had gained and changed as a result of the previous three months induction.
