Eight carers known to the Lewisham Carers' Centre tutor were recruited to participate in the pilot. The pilot was planned around weekly on-site attendance and facilitation in the ICT suite at Lewisham Carers' Centre together with remote usage for those with home-based access. All learner formative assignments were to be completed within the online programme and responses from the tutor were also to be provided online. The ICCA project piloted the four units of Module 1 over a four-week period from the beginning of February 2004. Each week, at an agreed time, the learners assembled for 2-3 hours at the centre and began a new unit. Each unit was completed by learners before they commenced the following week's unit. Learners wishing to use the centre outside agreed meeting times were provided with a timetable detailing availability of facilities and giving the tutor's availability if required either remotely or in the centre.
