The pilot (p2)

Launch day - induction
The 'launch' took place on the first day of the four-week cycle. Because this was a pilot, this induction day included activities that will probably not be replicated in the full rollout. These included a pre-pilot questionnaire administered by the evaluator and a presentation and explanation about the fact that this was a pilot. This pre-pilot questionnaire was aimed at understanding the ICT use and skills levels of the pilot learners; their motivation in doing the course; their experience, if any, of Lewisham College; their links to networks of carers; and their expectations about the course. This was not intended as a formal skills assessment instrument and was solely intended to support the objectives of the pilot.

No formal ICT skills assessment was undertaken with the learners whose skill levels were known to the tutor through her role as ICT tutor at the Carers' centre.

The tutor welcomed the learners and explained the pilot and her role and availability. She gave the learners information about the e-learning resources and the commitment required and about the anticipated qualification and assessment. The Lewisham College e-learning team member provided slides for the launch to illustrate the facilities and access availability for the learners at the college. She also brought registration forms and assisted learners in completing them. The City & Guilds Technical and Piloting Manager had pre-registered the learners and invited each immediately to begin work on the first unit with support from the tutor. The City & Guilds Technical and Piloting Manager also provided technical support.
