Conclusions (p3)

2. Stimulating demand will be essential and may be strongly linked to where it is perceived to be physically located.
The Head of the Lewisham Carers' Centre was quite clear that, for her, the most important result would be in relation to demand. If carers wanted to do the course and expected more, then she would like to have Lewisham Carers' Centre involved further, subject to resources being available. It is evident that the carers' centres have a role in driving awareness and stimulating demand given their relationship with carers.

However, it is also important to note that carers' centres differ widely in terms of their facilities, role and resources. Lewisham Carers' Centre has an ICT suite and prior to the pilot, was already providing ICT training with a dedicated ICT trainer. Some of the carers on the pilot were identified from those that had come to the centre for ICT training. However, only 50% of those that started on the pilot visited the Carers' Centre for reasons other than ICT training. It is also important to note however, that even those that only used the centre for ICT training were there because they were carers in the first place.

Three of the five attending the final review said they would definitely do more modules if they were available. They were interested in the 'qualification' and said they would want to find out about getting assessment and accreditation. Of the other two, one is 70 and is more interested in developing his ICT skills. The other is working part time and is more interested in ICT skills development. This throws some light on the different kinds of motivation of these learners.
