Appendix 6: Post pilot interview with Learning for Living learners


Objective
To review with the experience of the pilot with the carers and to understand what issues will need to be addressed for future groups undertaking this model of learning for living. To draw out more general lessons for all the stakeholders on the motivation, characteristics and circumstances of learners using learning technologies to support their learning and personal development.

Start with warm up - to get them talking to one another - five minutes. Then, together, discuss and gather information about very specific issues.

1. The positive and negative aspects of coming to the carers' centre for learning
a. Convenience?
b. Association with caring?
c. Association with learning?
d. Access to what they need for learning?

2. The experience at Lewisham College
a. Did they hear from anyone about their registration?
b. Did they go to the college?
c. Will they go and if so, why; if not, why not?
d. How could the college help them in their personal development?

3. The programme
a. What else would they do on day 1 to introduce the programme?
b. What else would have been useful to have been given either in advance or at the start?
c. Was it easy / hard to use?
d. Was it relevant to their daily lives?
e. Did they like it and what did they like most, least?
f. Would they encourage others to do it?
g. If they were encouraging others, how would they describe it and what advice would they give them?
h. Who is best suited to it and who is least suited to it in their opinion?
i. What would they change about the content?
j. What would they change about the way the whole approach works?
k. Recommendations to City and Guilds?
l. Recommendations to Carers UK?

4. Walk through programme discussing and commenting on each unit.
General discussion about each unit - especially first and last.
General discussion about positive and negative - especially what was most enjoyable, what stimulated most discussion, and what was really useful - with specific examples.

5. How did they find Yvonne as a tutor?
a. What would they have liked her to do more of/differently?
b. If they were asked to support a learner what would they do?

6. Learning at home
a. Who used the programme at home?
b. Did they have any problems and what were they?
c. How do they feel about learning remotely on the computer at home?
d. Did anyone use the discussion feature?
e. What would encourage them to use it?
f. Would they talk to one another from home?

7. What will they do next?

8. Would they stay in touch with one another or other carers through the Internet if it were available?

9. Anything else they would like to add?
